GREEN BAY, Wis. — Unless things go terribly and downright catastrophically wrong, you probably won’t see Kyle McCord in a game that actually impacts the Green Bay Packers’ regular-season record.
But the former sixth-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles is still auditioning this summer—whether that’s for a spot on the Packers’ practice squad or on another team’s 53-man roster is all dependent on how well he performs. If Thursday night’s preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers is any indication, the future is bright.
“Great poise,” said head coach Matt LaFleur of McCord’s impressive showcase. It was in a losing effort, but that’s not really an indictment of either team in exhibition play, good or bad. The Packers lost in lopsided fashion despite holding a 9-7 lead with three minutes left in the third quarter—they’d surrender a 21-0 run to the Drew Allar-led Steelers to lose 28-9.
The play of McCord, though, was one of the few developments from the evening that the Packers can walk away content with.
