GREEN BAY, Wis. — After sleeping on it, Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur stood by his decision to pass up a chip-shot field goal for a critical fourth-and-1 conversion attempt in Sunday’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
The Packers already had the points on the board after Trey Smack booted a 40-yard field goal attempt through the uprights, but an offsides penalty on Vikings edge rusher Dallas Turner placed LaFleur in a predicament. The Packers, sporting a 22-17 lead in the fourth quarter, could’ve elected to preserve the points and give themselves an eight-point cushion, or they could’ve accepted the five-yard penalty and created what should’ve been a manageable fourth-and-1.
LaFleur opted for the latter.
